The Guinness Brush Dance Record

09/02/2010

One Corkman.... 150 dancers.... one mad plan....

Máirtín de Cógáin has been all year planning to set a Guinness world record for the greatest number of dancers doing the brush dance – so they are recruiting at least 150 people or so to establish a new world record at CelticFest Mississippi. (Carrigaline, Co. Cork during the DamhsaFest is the place to beat, with 139 brush dancers last July.)

Please join in for this world record-setting event!  Be sure to bring your broom (and an extra to share if you can), or there will be brooms for sale at the festival -- just in case if you forget to bring your own.

De Bogman Takes Manhattan
From the 27th of July to the 1st of August, Máirtín will be performing the North American Debut of De Bogman, off Broadway at the Irish Repertory Theatre. You can read a REVIEW about the show.

De Bogman is a powerhouse one-man show, written by Máirtín de Cógáin and Brian Desmond, while Máirtín was still in University and Brian was finding himself. It's a boxing movie, it's a love story, it's a rags to riches saga that embodies Irish America.  Máirtín plays 20 characters in under an hour.

Two plays in Rochester, MN
Máirtín will perform his two one-man shows, one after the other, at the
Rochester Civic Theatre:

De BogmanDe Bogman to debut in New York

07/15/2010
Book online HERE!!
First performed to sell-out audiences over 10 years ago in Cork, Ireland, De Bogman is a comedy that defines the notion of postmodern Irish theater.

Effortlessly blending physical comedy with the fine Irish tradition of storytelling, De Bogman is a riotous, rollicking journey following Declan who, from his humble origins as a village idiot in Ireland, emigrates to America to become World Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

A decade after its original performance, De Bogman is more relevant than ever as the personal and the political meet head on in this frantic and fast-paced tour de force of farcical theater.

The play has toured throughout Ireland and the UK, playing to sell-out audiences in over forty towns and cities and is set to take New York by storm this summer.

Starring Máirtín de Cógáin (The Wind That Shakes The Barley) as De Bogman.
Directed by Brian Desmond.
Written by Máirtín de Cógáin and Brian Desmond.
Produced by Colm McAuliffe.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAY

“Excellent…considerable acting, writing and directing talents” – The Irish Examiner

“A long and loud raspberry at everything decent Ireland stands for” – The Irish Sunday Independent

“A mesmerizing display of surrealist humor and classic Irish storytelling” – The Irish Evening Echo

“The freshest and most original take on Irish theater yet” – The Cork Examiner

ABOUT THE SHOW

Echoing classic sporting films like Gentleman JimRaging BullRocky and This Sporting LifeDe Bogman breathes life into a classic, age-old story.

De Bogman tells the story of Declan, a prodigious boxing talent who, from his humble origins as a village idiot in Ireland, goes  to America to become world heavyweight boxing champion.

Declan defies all obstacles in this rags-to-riches fable.  Every sporting genius must encounter his share of pain and suffering, and Declan is no exception.  He blunders his way through a world which struggles to comprehend his unique talents and rural Irish ways, encountering a series of ruthless characters who exploit his fighting skills for their own means.

The story proceeds at a breathtaking pace from Declan's brawling existence in rural Ireland, through his
brutal prize-fighting career in Philadelphia and finally, his meteoric rise to the top of the professional boxing ladder.

The Project Heads West

07/05/2010
The days are few before the Máirtín de Cógáin Project heads west for HirishFest and a trail of concerts. The Project on this tour is fleshed out by the Irish trad trio of the South, Legacy.

The show is entitled 'From Cork with Love' and brings the unique view of romance from the south of Ireland. The Project burnishes songs long forgotten to their original luster, all the while poking fun at either side of the adventure.

Captain Mackey's Album Launch

de Barra's Mackey Launch06/21/2010
The official Irish launch of 'Soldiers Songs' at de Barra's Folk Club in Clonakilty is one for the record books. Friends, families, and fans of the home turf were treated to the full complement of troops for the first time. Ireland's current Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, delivered the key note address for the occasion, and songs of the Irish abroad and at home filled the night air. Fionán de Cógáin wrote an ad hoc poem for the occasion (which will be scanned and available here before too long), plus a little encore meta-poem.

The night in Clonakilty marks the middle of the launch tour, with dates at the Crane Bar in Galway, Matt Molloy's in Westport, and Malone's Music Emporium in Milltown Malbay. The remainder of the tour centers around Cork, though stretching its arms to Dingle and Clonmel, with a grand finale in Buttevant, the Center of the Universe. Hup san áirde!
